Signals
Signals is a series of etchings created with support by the Regional Arts and Culture Council's Make|Learn|Build Grant, starting in 2022.
Submarine cables carry our data via the internet all over the world, through large telecommunication cables laid on the seafloor. Our technology not only changes the ecology above ground, but also in the depths of the ocean. I wanted to imagine an undersea world where the organisms are made from those cables, and exist in harmony with them. In my research into how these large cables affected their new surroundings, I found that they do minimal harm to organisms living around them. Most organisms learn to live with their new electronic friends, and some even prefer to live among them, possibly due to the heat they emit. This heat thankfully is not significant enough to contribute to the overall warming of the oceans.
